September 2017 Newsletter

Hi Blanketeers!

* The air is cooling and it’s great blanket making weather. Hope you’re enjoying your blanketeering. I know I am.  Mark your calendar for Tuesday Sept. 19 at 1pm for our monthly meeting (1366 Milton Way San Jose). We hope you can make it. Join us for show’n’tell, pick up some donated blanket-making supplies or ‘challenges’, share your blanket making ideas with other blanketeers, sign up to help at some key upcoming events, join in the Thank-You raffle and much more. Also please note, our bagging date is early this month (Thursday September 21due to schedule conflicts within our bagging team) so be sure we receive your finished blankets before that date to be included in this month’s distribution.

* Blanket Stats: In August we received 625 blankets and we distributed 481 blankets through: Camp Corral, El Camino Hospital-NICU, JW House, KAFPA, Kaiser Hospital – Pediatrics and NICU, Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at El Camino, O’Connor Hospital – Pediatrics, Public Health, Regional Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House, San Jose Family Shelter, San Jose Social Services and Valley Medical Center. Our chapter total to date is 79,292!

* Mark your calendar for this fall’s MAKE A BLANKET DAY, SATURDAY OCTOBER 21ST 10am-4pm - new hours this year. (We can’t set up the night before as usual due to another event at the church, so our setup volunteers will be arriving at 8am to get the room ready for everyone. We have a few signed up but we need more helpers, so please let me know if you can come early. Thanks!!) As usual, we’ll be at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church – Cupertino (20920 McClellan Rd.) and having the monthly meeting at 11am followed by the potluck lunch. Quilters, bring your own projects this year – we will have batting available, as well as yarn and some fleece. Hope you can join us for the fun time.

* Here’s a thank-you that we received in August:

Hello, We received a baby blanket made by Britany B for our son from Santa Clara Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Thanks, Hari

 * Registration for the new Project Linus MYSTERY QUILT CHALLENGE – Exploring the World with Ethan is now open and the first clue will be shared this Saturday! Your $15 donation to join in the fun will go completely to our chapter if you SPECIFY SAN JOSE, CA chapter when you register. We had a number of blanketeers join in last year and they had a great time. All the quilts were so cute!! PLEASE share the link with your fellow quilterswww.projectlinus.org and invite them to join in the fun.  Any questions – contact me at sjlinus@comcast.net or 408-252-1858. Happy quilting!

* Upcoming events this week:

- Saturday Sept. 16: Bark in the Park – Mary, Yvonne and Julie are running the booth for us (the booth fee was donated by John and Mary Kelly – thank you!)

* VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  There are a few events coming up that we need volunteers for – please sign up today or soon (via email sjlinus@comcast.net or phone 408-252-1858) - the events can’t be held without volunteer assistance.

#1 IBM – San Jose: Make a Blanket Days – need one volunteer for each date, to assist me (Sharon) with the prep and blanket making sessions Oct 10, 17, 19 and 24. We set up at 10:30am and the work sessions are 11am-1pm. Carpooling available if desired. IBM just gave us another $1000 grant for supplies, so we are going to help guide their volunteers to make lots of blankets for us.

#2 Los Gatos High School’s Volunteer Fair. Tuesday Sept 26 (mid morning) We need someone to represent us there for about an hour – please contact me if you can help out  - sjlinus@comcast.net).

* PL National Headquarters is organizing disaster relief for Houston and Florida. The goal is to send 5000 blankets (preferred size 40” x 50-60” or larger). All blankets must be shipped no later than Sept. 30. We will assess if we have extra blankets that we can send as of our bagging day Sept. 21 and if we have some we can send, we’ll need donations to help cover the shipping costs.  If you would like to support this special request, please send your check made out to Project Linus to me (Sharon Lee 11061 S Stelling Rd Cupertino CA 95014) NO LATER THAN Sept. 30.  You must include “Disaster Relief Postage for San Jose, CA Chapter” on the memo line for us to get 100% reimbursement for this expense. Thanks in advance for our support.

* IMPORTANT CHANGE (repeating from last month’s newsletter): As we have adjusted a few meeting dates this summer, we’ve realized that it’s much easier (for our generous hosts Mary and John Kelly) to have both the meeting and the bagging day in the same week. So we’ll be moving our ‘normal’ schedule for both sessions to the 4th week of the month – meetings will remain on Tuesdays and bagging will be either Thursday or Saturday, alternating months.  In September we’re moving ‘part way’ (to the 3rd week) 9/19 for the meeting and 9/21 for bagging, and in October we’ll move to the 4th week (with  the Make a Blanket Day on the 21st - and bagging will be on Sat. 10/28). Thanks for your flexibility as we refine our schedules. (Note: December’s annual potluck and holiday meeting will always be the 2nd Tuesday at 1pm at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in San Jose.)

* We are no longer turning in the BIG ink and toner cartridges to Staples, but PLEASE DO KEEP TURNING IN SMALL EMPTY INK CARTRIDGES. We will continue to use those to earn ‘free’ purchases of bagging supplies, brochures, signs, etc.

* As you probably know, Barb is still on vacation, returning in November or December. In the meantime, if you need batting, contact Linda Cortez by Oct. 8 or pick some up at the MABD (savsgram@aim.com); for quilt backing fabric or fabric donations, contact Norma Bauman (nlbauman@earthlink.net); if you need to borrow a “scissors box” for a blanket making event, contact Mary Kelly (mary@gofigureinc.com) or me (sjlinus@comcast.net).

* See you at our chapter meeting October 19 at 1pm at Mary’s (1366 Milton Way San Jose). Thank you all for everything you do for Project Linus – helping us comfort and support local children in need.  Together we’re making a big difference in young lives near us.

Sharon (and Barb – on vacation until November or December)
