June 2016 Newsletter

Hello Blanketeers!  Summer appears to have arrived a bit earlier than the calendar says – isn’t it grand! J  Hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather. Here are the results from May and a few updates before our Tuesday June 14th daytime meeting at Mary’s house (1366 Milton Way San Jose) – 1pm.

* I will be attending the national Project Linus conference this coming week, so I will not be at the chapter meeting. Thanks again to Mary Ann Risso for making the ‘challenge quilt’ for us (see photo on our web site). I look forward to bringing back lots of new ideas to share and hopefully word about upcoming changes at PLHQ (you may remember our national president of 17 years Carol Babbitt has announced her retirement for 1H2017.) Barb will be hosting our June 14th meeting (thanks Barb!) just before she leaves for her extended summer travels (she’ll be away until October).  Happy Trails to you (and Greg and Sadie)!

* During Barb’s absence, your contact for:

-       Batting is Linda Cortez (savsgram@aim.com)

-       Quilt backing fabric and fabric donations is Norma Bauman (nlbauman@earthlink.net)

-       Blanket Delivery Reporting – Barb via email (and me as back-up, if needed)

* As always your contact for:

-       Bagging & Sorting Days:

o   Saturday Bagging/Sorting - Elizabeth Tang-Kong (etangkong@yahoo.com) (June/August/October, etc.)

o   Thursday Bagging/Sorting Kathy Wuerz (Kathy.a.wuerz@gmail.com) (July/September/November, etc.)

-       Sew Days:

o   1st Thursday of the month  - Deb Bragen (bragen@sbcglobal.net)

o   3rd Wednesday day of the month – Sandy Crane (sjgravelle@gmail.com)

(PLEASE NOTE: Due to renovations at Sandy’s club house this month only, there will  not be a 3rd Wed. Sew Day – it will return in July)

-       Yarn and Fleece/Yarn “Kits”: At this time we do not have a new ‘yarn maven’ confirmed. If you are interested in helping with this position (so we can continue to provide donated yarn as well as fleece w/yarn for skip-stitching), please contact me/Sharon (sjlinus@comcast.net). Until we get a new yarn maven, we may not be able to provide sorted yarn and fleece ‘kits’ at the meetings).

* Looking ahead to July, since Mary, Barb and I will all be away on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, we will be moving our July meeting to the 3rd Tuesday just this one time… so mark your calendars for Tuesday July 19 at 7pmfor our meeting at Mary Kelly’s house.

* Our numbers for May were very good – we received 713 blankets and distributed 717 blankets.  Our blanket recipients groups this month were CASA, CPS Receiving Center, El Camino Hospital - NICU, Good Samaritan Hospital – NICU, KAPFA, Kaiser Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics,

O’Connor Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, Public Health, Regional Medical Center, Ronald

McDonald House, San Jose Family Shelter, San Jose Social Services, Stanford-Child Life Services, TAPS and Valley Medical Center.  This brings our chapter total to 71,519 blankets.

* We are saying good-bye to Anita Anderson who is moving out of the area.  Thank you so much Anita for all you’ve done for our chapter over so many years – we wish you the very best and we will miss you!  Hope you can find a chapter near your new location.

* We have received a donation of $350 worth of fleece from Daisy Troop 61205. They used a portion of their cookie sale proceeds to purchase it and shopped for the fleece together. They also made blankets for us. Thank you to all the scouts who have supported Project Linus.

* Gerri Smoluk sold a donated quilt kit and quilt (that were donated to us but too large and not appropriate for our use) on eBay, earning over $100 for the chapter.

* Saratoga Retirement Community continues to make and sell baby afghans in their site store and they donate the proceeds to our chapter (as well as making blankets which they donate annually).

* Mary Kelly recently batched up all the donated yarn that we can’t use and sold the lot for $200.

* Linda Skipper continues to make fleece selvage doggie ‘pull toys’ and sells them.

* Amazon users – please remember to sign into our website to start your Amazon purchase – that earns us at least 4% of the purchase price with no additional cost to you! See link on the left of the home page.

*Thanks to everyone that helps support our chapter fundraising in so many creative ways.

* As you know, we have two groups of ‘sorters and baggers’ that take care of these all important functions every other month (just 6 times in a whole year for each team).  We need 1 more person for each of the teams (on the last Thursday or last Saturday of the month).  Come and help once and see how it works – we’re guessing you’ll be back!  Please contact me/Sharon, Elizabeth Tang-Kong or Kathy Wuerz for more info. The next bagging dates are Saturday June 25th and Thursday July 28th at 9am (at Mary Kelly’s house).

* Thanks to Renee Jones and Sandy Crane who will deliver 100 blankets to Camp Corral in July.

* We shipped over 100 blankets to the TAPS Good Grief camp this year. A special thank you goes to Phyllis Donohue-Maroney for her generous donation to help defray the shipping costs.

* Barb and Linda Cortez hosted 2 Make a Blanket events at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Sunnyvale and Milpitas recently – we welcome TFS as a corporate partner.

*  We have a few events coming up in the fall that we need volunteers for – please let me/Sharon know if you can help:

            - Bark in the Park (Dog fair) Sept 17th – Mary Kelly hosting our booth

            - 6th annual Lexus of Stevens Creek Teen Volunteer Fair – Saturday Sept. 24 9am-noon

we need a host for our table to take sign-ups for volunteering and hand out brochures

As always, thank you for your generous support.  Together our chapter has brought comfort, support and smiles to over 71,000 children. Thank you for being a part of our group of caring blanketeers.

We hope to see you soon at a meeting or a Sew Day (more details available on our website www.sjlinus.org). Happy blanketeering!

Thanks as always for being blanketeers and helping our chapter provide snuggly comfort to local children in need through the wonderful blankets you make.  You’ve made it possible for us to support nearly 6000 children this year alone – THANK YOU!
