Hello fellow blanketeers!
With the high
temperatures this week, it may be a challenge to think of warm, cuddly
blankets, but you’ve been turning them in in great numbers still and we appreciate it! The need for comfort and support is always in
season. J Thanks so much!
We’ll be sorting and bagging blankets next weekend for distribution, so please
turn in your finished blankets soon.
With your generous
support, our blanket count continues to grow and we are helping lots of local
children. In April we received 467 blankets and we gave away 541 blankets to the following groups: CASA, El Camino
Hospital - NICU, EMQ Families First, Good Samaritan Hospital – NICU, KAPFA,
Kaiser Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, Public Health, San Jose Family Shelter,
San Jose Social Services, School Health Clinics and Valley Med. Our chapter’s blanket total since inception
Thanks to Barb and
Mary for hosting last month’s meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone next
week, Tuesday May 20 at 7pm at Mary Kelly’s home (1366 Milton Way San Jose) for
our May meeting. Remember to bring your finished blankets, empty ink
cartridges, extra coins for the “Good Change” donation jar and your calendar so
you can sign up to help at our booth at the Santa Clara County Fair July 31 –
We shipped 91
blankets to the TAPS Good Grief camp this year – and they are so thankful for
our support. And a special thanks goes
out to Renee Jones who delivered our 5 big boxes to the Santa Cruz Staples
store (the closest one that still accepts our Rewards coupons for shipping via
UPS – most Staples stores have changed over to US Postal Service). That saved us well over $150, money which we will
use for blanket making supplies instead! Thanks so much Renee!
Speaking of THE
SANTA CLARA COUNTY FAIR, our leader for this event, Deb Bragen, met with me and
Barb and she’s got great plans for our booth at the fair this summer (This will
be a 1st for our chapter!).
* It would be great if everyone could plan to stop by and
visit the booth, and hang out for a
while to help introduce fair goers to Project Linus. We’ll have things to hand
outs/giveaways and blankets to work on so you can invite folks to help and learn.
There will be display blankets and more. Even if it’s just for an hour or two, bring a project to work on and
join in the fun (we’ll have some sewing machines there or BYO, as well as
fleece to cut & or skip-stitch.) Better yet, come for noon-5pm or 5pm – closing (9pm Thu and Sun, 10pm Fri and Sat) and cover a shift with us. Either way, we’d appreciate knowing who is coming when, so please
contact Deb Bragen if you haven’t already and let her know when you can help
out. (email Deb at email@example.com or leave a message at 408-997-2358)
* Deb will be hosting some prep sessions on the following
Thursdays (May 29, June 12, June 26, July 10) at Calvary United Methodist Church 729 Morse Ave San Jose 95126 (near
the corner of Naglee Ave.). Most of the
activities will be helping prep fleece for tying and skip-stitching, you may
also make some giveaways (eg stickers, handouts), make quilt kits, etc. If you
can help there, please let Deb know you’ll be coming to she can plan for the right
number of volunteers on each date. (see
contact info above).
Mary Kelly and I are
all set to attend the Project Linus National Conference June 18-21 in
Bloomington, IL. All are welcome. See www.projectlinus.org for more
details. Jacquelyn Lepetich has
graciously offered to make the challenge quilt this year. The conference theme is camping and the great
outdoors. We’ll be bringing back lots of fun ideas to share.
anticipation of Barb’s extended vacation/absence, she’s hosting ‘quilters
shopping sprees’ at her home (1240 Hanchett Ave San Jose) Friday May 23rd from 10:30-2:30 and 1:30-3:30, and Saturday May 24th from 2-4. (She
is bagging in the morning Saturday at Mary's so don't come early.) She’ll have
cotton quilting fabric (all fabric was donated to us, so it’s free). So bring your favorite patterns and pick some
fabric for your summer quilting for PL. Contact Barb to schedule a time (408-295-2287, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Quilters are also
reminded that we have 90” Warm and Natural batting available by the yard for
sale (we get it at wholesale prices through PLHQ). Contact Barb if you’re interested.
We’re still in need
of ‘boy blankets’ – especially teen size (72 inches long), so keep that in mind
when your deciding on your next project.
We’ve been adding
thank-you’s to the web site as we receive them – take a peek when you have a
chance. Link to Thank-you's
I’ll be accepting
blankets at John Muir Middle School from their Junior National Honor Society
next week. They collected coins for two weeks and raised $800 for blanket supplies this year. They expect to have
40 blankets completed for us by next week.
special thanks to
Barb and her team of ‘donation sorters’. We’ve been blessed with some
really big donations lately and those ladies met the challenge. Thanks
this important role for us.
Keep using our
website’s Amazon.com link for your purchases there, use our SHARES card at
Lucky and SAVEMART, and keep collecting empty ink cartridges for us – they help
us finance many of our chapter’s expenses.
(And for your
planning purposes, our June meeting will be a week earlier than usual so we can
have Barb with us before her big adventure begins – mark your calendars for Tuesday June 10 at 1pm @ Mary Kelly’s.)
