Hello Blanketeers!

School has started so that means great blanket making weather can’t be far behind!  Hope you had a great summer. Here are our results for July and a few updates before our next meeting, Tuesday September 13, 7pm at Mary Kelly’s house (1366 Milton Way San Jose).

* We’re still calculating our August totals, but our donations for the month of July were as follows – we received 363 blankets and distributed 526 blankets.  Our blanket recipients groups this month were Camp Corral, CASA, CPS Receiving Center, El Camino Hospital – NICU, Good Samaritan Hospital – NICU, KAPFA, Kaiser Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, Lucille Packard – El Camino Hospital, O’Connor Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, Public Health, Regional Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House, San Jose Family Shelter and San Jose Social Services.  The total number of blankets donated to date through July by our chapter is 72,260.

* We got a very special thank you recently and I wanted to share it with you all as a reminder of how special our blankets are to those who receive them…

My name is William R. - I'd like to thank you for the blanket you made me it made me happy. I'm at o'conner right now with a broken leg awaiting surgery. I will keep this blanket forever as a memory that there are people in the world that care for others they don't even know. Thank you Chris Sentz for the 49ers blanket. Please contact me back at (email provided). P.S. I broke my leg in a football game. I play for the Campbell Bears

* The new president/CEO of Project Linus has been named. It is Patty Gregory, chapter coordinator in Kansas City, MO.  National headquarters is moving to Kansas City, MO - the servers, Project Linus store items and much more are on the trucks and will be up and running again soon (target September 19th). So if you’ve tried to reach PLHQ recently, they’ve been off line during the big move from Illinois.  Patty’s chapter has had over 100,000 blankets donated, so she really knows Project Linus!  She brings a great combination of business talents and Project Linus knowledge to the position. Welcome Patty! The new address for PLHQ is now: PO Box 1548 Belton MO 64012

* Project Linus is again hosting a Mystery Quilt Challenge Fundraiser this year. This year the theme is Gracie’s Get Well Garden.  As Sylvie can tell you from participating in last year’s fun challenge, it’s a week-by-week reveal of downloadable instructions and tips to complete a beautiful kid’s quilt.  Go to www.projectlinus.org now to register. The challenge begins September 10th. The cost is a $15 donation to Project Linus (which will come to our chapter if you include our chapter name - South Bay / San Jose, CA). There will be great prizes (including a Janome 2016 NQM sewing machine with thread cutter!). I know of at least 3 of our chapter members are participating already. Join in the fun!

* I’m sending a BIG thank you to Bon Appetit Management Company (BAMCO) of Palo Alto and Vicki Field our dedicated blanketeer there for printing hundreds of new brochures and THOUSANDS of blanket tags for us again this year! They have been generous supporters of our chapter for years, providing us with these much needed supplies and we can’t thank them enough.

* Last month, I mentioned that we wanted to expand our Thank You Raffle which we do at our

meetings and Make a Blanket Days, so we held a virtual PL t-shirt Thank you Raffle. All blanketeers who had donated at least one blanket this year had their names in the running.  The winners are: Victoria Perry, Monta Vista CSF, NCL Heritage Oaks, Sangha Crafters, Joan Sarranto, Cub Scout Troop 312, Anna Marie Hagman, Denise Stephenson, Claire Whitesside, Pearl Tover and Cindy Wotel. Please contact me (email sjlinus@comcast.net or call 408-252-1858 to make arrangements to receive your t-shirt). Congratulations and thanks for being blanketeers!

* As mentioned at our last meeting. Kathy Whitesel is hosting a “Sew Day” at her clubhouse this Saturday September 10th from 10am-3pm, come for any or all of the time. The address is 1055 N Capitol Ave San Jose 95133. All are welcome. Bring any project to work on – sew, knit, crochet, fleece, quilt tying – tables available. If you have an Ott lamp or equivalent, you might bring it too. Potluck lunch is encouraged.

* JoAnn’s update: Regarding the JoAnn’s VIP discount program – new cards are available now (the current ones expired 08/31/16 - new ones will expire in May 2018!), some replacements are being mailed but anyone can get a replacement card at JoAnn stores by asking for it at the checkout counter.   If you haven’t ever registered for their program and coupons, go to www.joann.com/VIP to do so, and they’ll mail you their current card. Then ask me for a Project Linus volunteer card (it has the Tax ID on it, which you’ll need). Take both cards to JoAnn’s to get a manager’s authorization on your new discount card then start saving 10% every time you shop at Jo-Ann’s!

Also remember another drop-off location and supporter of ours – Beverly’s Fabrics and Crafts (Hillsdale Ave at Camden Ave, San Jose).   They offer a 10% Senior Discount any day anytime (you just have to ask for it).  They mail coupons if you register with them at https://beverlys.com. Their Red Heart Yarn is not a Best Bev Buy any longer, but you can use a coupon for it - same with the batting (by the way, you can use a 40% coupon on batting... it is not considered "fabric"). They are getting a lot a very nice fabrics at $3 and $4 /yard. Please check store regularly for new arrivals. They go very fast. When shopping at Beverly’s, remember to tell them Project Linus sent you!

* For those of you who signed up to make quilts for Project Sanctuary, remember to bring you blankets to the Sept. 13th meeting. Elaine will be there to pick them up for delivery in early October.

* We have lots of events coming up in the next month or so, and we’ve been asked to help with Make a Blanket Days throughout the fall. Please sign up to help spread the word about Project Linus and teach new blanketeers.  The events include:
