May 2016 Newsletter

Hello Blanketeers!  Enjoying the late rain and recent cool days? It’s great blanketeering weather, isn’t it!

Here are just a few updates before our May 10th daytime meeting tomorrow at Mary’s house (1366 Milton Way San Jose) – 1pm.

Our numbers for April were huge – we received 943 blankets (Wow!) and 498 distributed.  Our current blanket recipients groups include AACI Asian Women’s Home, AACI Survivors of Torture, Alum Rock Counseling Center, Camp Sanctuary, CASA, CPS Receiving Center, El Camino Hospital - NICU, Evelyn Cox Agency, Family Giving Tree, Gilroy Social Services, Good Samaritan Hospital – NICU, KAPFA, Kaiser Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, O’Connor Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, Parents Helping Parents, Public Health, Regional Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House, San Jose Family Shelter, San Jose Social Services, Unity Care and Valley Medical Center.  This brings our chapter total to 70,806 blankets.

Here are a few thank-you’s we’ve recently received:

* Hello, I was wondering how I can make and donate blankets. We were just recently in the hospital for a week with my 9 month old and received a blanket. I love the blanket and would like to give back now. Please let me know. Thanks! Heather

* Thank you for caring J  Martha (it came with an adorable picture of her newborn)

* Valley Medical Hospital wishes to thank you for your donations of 3 large blankets. Your gift is so appreciated. Norma

Sharon Warren (our yarn maven) will be stepping down at the end of the month. We thank her for service to the chapter, keeping our yarn organized, bringing some to the meetings ‘for the taking’ and matching it with fleece for skip-stitching ‘kits’ once a month.  We are in need of someone to take over this role for us starting in June. Barb or I would love to speak with you, if you are interested in helping out with, if only for a few months. Please call us to discuss this topic at (Barb) 408-295-2287 or me 408-252-1858. THANKS!!!

As you know, we have two groups of ‘sorters and baggers’ that take care of these all important functions every other month (just 6 times in a whole year for each team).  We could really use 1 more person for each of the teams (on last Thursday or last Saturday of the month).  Come and help once and see how it works – we’re guessing you’ll be back!  Please contact Barb (sjlinus@gmail.com) for more info. The next date is Thursday May 26th at 9am (at Mary Kelly’s house).

Also please note our next meeting will be Tuesday June 14 at Mary's (our usual 2nd Tuesday of the month) – TIME TO BE CONFIRMED. I will be on my way to National Conference that day, so Barb will be leading the meeting (just before she leaves for her summer long travels). All are welcome - come share and see recently made blankets as well as help with some 'small projects' as we discuss upcoming chapter activities. We will have some fleece+yarn kits, some quilt kits and some yarn available, as well as “challenges” and our ‘thank-you raffle’.

We are sending nearly 100 blankets this year to the TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) Good Grief Camp on Memorial Day in Arlington Virginia.  Thank you for the wonderful response of red, white and blue blankets!  Our Staples Rewards will cover over half of the cost this year J. If you would like to make a donation to help cover the rest of the shipping costs (estimated at $150), please send a check made out to Project Linus to me (Sharon Lee 11061 S Stelling Rd Cupertino CA 95014). Thank you!

As always, thanks for your wonderful support.  Together our chapter has brought comfort, support and smiles to over 70,000 children. Thank you for being a part of this great group of caring blanketeers.

Hope to see you soon at a meeting or a Sew Day (more details available on our website www.sjlinus.org).

Happy Blanketeering in 2016!
