April 2014 Newsletter

Greetings fellow blanketeers!

Just a quick note to thank you all for your continuing support and invite you to the April meeting next Tuesday, April 22nd at Mary Kelly’s (1366 Milton Way SJ) at 1pm.  This will be our first Tuesday daytime meeting of the year.  Hope you can make it. Bring your finished blankets, blanketeering ideas (and your empty ink cartridges) and share a good time. I’m sorry I won’t be able to be there this time as my new job assignment does not currently afford me the afternoon time off, but I know Barb and Mary will do a great job. I’ll miss seeing everyone and the wonderful blankets that will be shared. I plan on being there for the May meeting (it’s planned to be an evening meeting).

TAPS update – so far we’ve collected around 90 blankets and I’ve notified the coordinator that we’ll be sending almost 100 I’m guessing and she is THRILLED!  Thanks to everyone that chose to participate in this special mission. The children attending this year’s Memorial Day Taps-Good Grief Camp will be uplifted and supported by these wonderful gifts. We’ll be shipping them out very soon (via the Santa Cruz Staples store that will still take our Staples Rewards coupons to cover shipping – keep those empty ink cartridges coming in!)   Renee Jones has offered to transport the blankets for us – thanks Renee!

Our blanket count continues to grow – thanks to you.  In March we received 558 blankets and we gave blankets to the following groups to help comfort and support local children in need: Eastside Public Health, Gilroy Social Services, KAPFA, Kaiser Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, O’Connor Hospital – NICU and Pediatrics, San Jose Family Shelter, San Jose Social Services, School Health Clinics, Unity Care and Valley Med.  Our chapter’s blanket total since inception is 56,909.

Last topic for this quick note – we’re moving forward with our plan to host a (working) booth at this year’s Santa Clara County Fair (July 31 thru August 3).  Deb Bragen has generously offered to chair this event for us. Now is the time to sign up - we need blanketeers to commit to be there for ‘mini Make a Blanket Day’ sessions.  The fair is open Noon-9pm on Thursday and Sunday, and Noon to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. At this time, we’re thinking of having two shifts per day, so folks could come and set-up their sewing machines, knit/crochet center or fleece projects and make blankets while sharing information about Project Linus with fair attendees and hand out our brochures, etc.  There will be tables, chairs and electricity provided. We need to have coverage for all time slots to make it work.  Please contact Deb (bragen@sbcglobal.net) or me (Sharon) and let us know what day/time works best for you to help us out at the fair. Looking forward to a fun time and introducing Project Linus to a lot of new blanketeers!
